Weather Fun Science Experiments

Science experiment introduces children to the concepts of observation, prediction and testing. The little minds are always curious and experiments encourage children to be curious, creative and confident.

Aside nurturing curiosity, experiments help children acquire new ways of asking questions and discovering the world around them.

It is always good to avoid lectures or that we have all the right answers when conducting the experiment. We should give children leeway to discover and most fun out of it.

Here we present an example of how parents and foster scientific exploration without get in the way of children’s need to explore and discover for themselves.

Experiment #1: Rain Clouds

Goals:

  1. Let the child make his own discovery.
  2. Child to understand that clouds are made up of droplets of water.
  3. When the water droplets grow heavy enough, it will fall as rain.

Before the child can start the experiment, she needs time to develop her ideas. It is advisable to start with an unstructured activity. You may try the following:

  1. Play with water.
  2. Play with cotton balls.
  3. Play with both cotton balls and water.

This is to let the child discover that cotton balls absorb water and when it is filled with water, she can have some ‘squeezing’ fun!

4. Upon completion of step 1 to 3, the real experiment can begin.

Materials:

  1. Cotton balls
  2. Glass for the coloured Water. Mix water and blue food dye.
  3. Small pail
  4. Sieve
  5. Dropper

Procedure:

Get child to imagine that

  1. She is the ‘RAIN MAKER’.
  2. The cottons balls are clouds.
  3. He has to drip the water slowly and observe what happens. The more ‘clouds’ the merrier! This will definitely draw a clearer distinction when it finally ‘rains’.

It is important to encourage the child to think and develop her ideas.

Questions to ask

  1. What makes clouds heavy?
  2. 2. What eventually happens when the clouds are heavy?

Experiment #2: Shaving Cream Clouds

Goals:

The goals and concept of this is similar to experiment #1 except that it requires the child to observe the process more closely. With the clear colour differentiation between the clouds (white shaving cream) and colourful water droplets, it makes observation easier and adds fun to this experiment.

Materials:

  1. Shaving Cream
  2. Several cups for the coloured water. Mix the cups of water with blue, green and red food dye respectively.
  3. A big jar. I used cookie jar.
  4. Droppers.

Advice:

  1. Get a BIG JAR. Yes! Literally big!
  2. Half-filled the jar with water
  3. Do not squeeze too much shaving cream. The ‘clouds’ should not ooze out of the jar. There must be space in between for the dripping to work.
  4. The more diluted the coloured water, the easier the ‘rain’ will fall.
  5. Be prepared for messy play!

There are 2 sets of examples.

Example 1 is ‘somehow’ failed as a small drinking glass is used. There isn’t much water and clouds to observe the process slowly. However, you can see that the child had immense fun and MESS!

Don’t say ‘NO’ to all messes, as some actually help your little ones learn about their world and build essential skills. You never know, you may grow a future scientist!
